The awards will recognize 6th – 12th grade students and teachers from the station’s 13-county viewing area who exhibit excellence in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There were 12 student submissions nominated for awards from 5 different counties. There were 7 teacher submissions nominated for categories such as Best STEM Integration, Most Innovative, and Best Community Connection.

Nominees can either nominate themselves or someone they know who builds, performs or organizes STEM-related programs for charities, social clubs or school projects. Submissions will be judged by a panel of Central Piedmont Community College STEM faculty and staff members who will select both student and teacher winners based on criteria in a number of categories, such as Focus Excellence in a STEM Field, Most Innovative and Best STEM Integration.

Nominees representing Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln, Rowan, Iredell, Stanly, Union, Anson, Catawba, Cabarrus, Cleveland, York and Lancaster Counties will be recognized in different award categories.

STEM Award winners will be recognized in front of a live studio audience on May 21 in CPCC’s Halton Theater, located on its Central Campus. The ceremony will be broadcast on May 22 at 8 p.m. on PBS Charlotte.  For more information and to obtain a copy of the 2014 Stem Awards Rubric click here.
